Barack Obama on Medical Marijuana

I found this video by way of the libertarian magazine Reason. Obama’s stance on medical marijuana, as espoused here, is the most rational of any president or major general election presidential candidate in recent memory.

how come he laughs at the end when saying potential terrorism?

I THINK HE WAS GIGGLING AT THE FACT THAT THEY R MORE WORRIED ABOUT FIGHTING AGAINST SOMETHING LESS IMPORTANT THAN TERRORIST AND HARDEN CRIMINALS BUT I AM DEF ON YOUR SIDE WE R AMERICANS U.S.A FOREVER

Anonymous's picture

Because worrying about people smoking pot is laughable when it comes to our REAL problems i.e. terrorism

Nicklas's picture

hey hey hey smoke weed everyday!!

Talks slowly, clears his throat, seems to blank out mid-sentence, breaks into a goofy smile at odd moments, I bet he just had some Mary Jane!

I like how he smiles when he says it’s not “high” on his list :)

carlos's picture

LOL

The blanking out is probably him thinking of how to formulate what he’s going to say in a politically safe manner.

Ha, now I know: Obama “Change” is Chump Change. It sure doesn’t sound like he’s got any plans for change in drug policy or other personal freedom issues.

“Fairly difficult tor regulate”… “safeguards”… “same controls as other drugs”, “changes in federal law”… won’t be high on his list because of healthcare and terrorism… Yep, he’s a politician all right.

Michael, have you forgotten Ron Paul? Compared to Ron Paul’s stance on marijuana, this is your average everyday moronic political double speak. As far as other presidents, you’d have to go back to Jimmy Carter to find such a “rational” stance on marijuana. There was discussion of decriminalization in Carter’s administration. The ONLY thing Obama said that made sense is that he wouldn’t spend federal resources against state medical marijuana laws. We’ll see if he holds true to that…

We’re talking about an herb, like tea. It’s safer than tea. The FDA’s own judge called it “the safest therapeutic substance known to man.” Meanwhile Obama’s talking about regulating it and prescribing it appropriately. Well what do I expect? He takes his marching orders from the bankers and big pharma. Besides, the government gets a bigger cut when it’s illegal. Only a slighter shade of pale better than McCain in only some ways.

When politicians say stupid things like Obama said in this video, we’ve got to call them out on it. Honestly, who in their right mind thinks that the safest herb in the world that grows everywhere all over the world should be (or even can be) “regulated” and “prescribed”. THAT’S STOOOOPID! (Unless of course one’s saying that because one profits from it’s illegality, which would make one an immoral corrupt liar.)

Thanks for the video.

Let’s take our country back,
Rob

Rob,

No, I haven’t forgotten about Ron Paul! I was thinking more of a general election presidential candidate.

OK, LOOK THE BIGGEST REASON THAT MARIJUNA IS ILLEGAL STILL IS BECAUSE OF A FEW FACTORS THAT STOPS THE LEGALIZATION FROM BEING PASSED. THE ” BIGGER FISH TO FRY” REASON IS ONE AT THE PRESENT TIME. BUT OTHER REASONS ARE ONES THAT ARE SIMPLE. CAN AMERICA HANDLE IT? I MEAN OBVIOUSLY WE CAN SAY YEAH BUT I KNOW SO MANY PEOPLE WHO DO SMOKE RESPONSIBLY BUT ALSO PEOPLE THAT ARE STILL GETTING THEIR CONCIOUSNESS BUBBLING TO THE SURFACE. THERE IS SO MANY PEOPLE THAT ARE STILL LEARNIGN ABOUT BEING RESPONSIBLE OR ARE FLAGRANTLY NOT CARING ABOUT RESPONSIBILITY. THERE ARE TOO MANY THINGS OUT THERE THAT ARE CAREFULLY DESIGNED TO BE A NEGATIVE TRANCE FOR MANY AND A POSITIVE OUTCOME FOR FEW. LIKE COMMERCIALS,MAGAZINES, ASPECTS OF SOCIAL SERVICES AND THIGNS OF THAT NATURE. WHEN AMERICA IS READY WEED WILL BE LEGAL. HOWEVER AMERICA MAY NOT BECOME READY UNTIL WEED IS LEGAL. CONCIOUSNESS AND AWARENESS IS THE KEY TOWARDS WINNING THIS CHANGE. SO SPREAD IT. SPREAD IT AND HELP THE YOUNG RISE. GROW CHANGE. EVOLVE. REDUCE REUSE RECYCLE AND ALL THAT JAZZ. I WILL PUBLISH A BOOK ON HOW TO USE DRUGS SAFELY WITH RESPECT TO EVERYTHING WE HOLD DEAR. UNIVERSAL SIMPLICITY UNIVERSLA LANGUAGE. BEING SAFE. AND HOW TO AVOID DESTABILIZATION AND INCREASE YOUR SENSATION OF BEING PART OF THE ROOT. LISTEN TO THE MUSIC BABY YEAH. ````CJ

UNIVERSAL SIMPLICITY's picture

IT WAS LEGAL AT ONE TIM E AND WAS A GREAT CASH CROP AND I DONT EVEN SMOKE… THE ONLY REASON IT WAs made illegal in the 30s is cali wanted to keep the mexicans out,but yet they r the first to legalize it go figure but hemp has more uses than smoking….clothing rope soforth and soon on aNd above all its GREEN PEACE SAFE LOL… BUT ON THE REAL IT GROWS A 1000 TIME FASTER THAN TREES AND CAN SAVE OUR FORREST

Anonymous's picture

perhaps we should consider the possibilities of hemp as well as marijuana here.
with people in power who seem to be willing to reason and appreciate the intelligence of people that know about plants and the natural world, we have the opportunity to create new markets with these plants. at the moment the united states is the only major industrialized nation doing no research on the possibilities of growing hemp for paper, clothing, food, oil and plastics, building materials, the list goes on…
as a plant that has the potential to leave the soil in better shape than when it arrived and relies far less on annual inputs to provide a high yield of diverse, valuable products, hemp should gain once again its place on our farms and in our awareness as a people. we must work together to expose the idiocracy of the chemical-mechanized agriculture that destroys the life in the soil and holds farmers as slaves, buying the same poisoned seed and soil year after year.

Im glad this is our president now. Marijuana was legal till the 30’s and its been around for centuries. Our ancestors used it for medical purposes. Its the idiots that take a stoner approach and just want it for recreational purposes… which im not against… but what Obama explained was said very well. We spend way too much keeping harmless criminals in jail because of this failed and horrendous “War on Drugs”. Read the book Reefer Madness, open your mind.

I think he realizes that marijuana is not a threatening and it’s the terrorism and the real drugs like cocaine or heroin. Compared with marijuana these drugs can easily send you in a drug rehab center and even kill you.

marijuana should be legal and taxed like tobacco or alcohol. just think of the jobs it would create and the revenue that taxes on marijuana surely help our country economy

The thing is all drugs have their uses and downfalls, but who do you leave responsibility of control; criminals who kill for favours or reponsible pharmacists with lincense and restriction? I am talking everything, except the really harsh, chemically mixed drugs which is in truth, the real problem with drugs - greed from the dealer filling them with rat poison etc, to increase his stock, all the way down to the addict.

People ask if the smoke is addictive; well of course it is, but the question is the extent of harm. That means folks, the true harmer in smoking a joint is the tobacco and that still has not been proven beyond a shadow of a doubt!

Biting your nails is based on nervous disposition and is classed as habitual, as we have all seen those people that bite them to the point of soreness so is there more chance of harm coming from infection; my friend’s fingers swelled to almost twice their size from such an infection so where is this extensive harm and is obesity the next target like here? We are talking governments; they don’t make decisions based on single goals and they will push further. If we stopped everything that did us harm, you would have to shut down half the working world from stress alone.

I know it’s early morning for you guys, but when you get the opportunity to read this can someone point me in the right direction or perhaps relay the information on the American governments stance on tobacco as it is banned in public places in England, they are discussing fining people for passive smoking to their pets (I wonder if that counts for goldfish) and it has destroyed the public house (bar) trade. Like I said, they never do things in singular steps.

Elysiumboy's picture

The American government doesn’t really have a national stance on tobacco use, apart from an Attorney General’s stamp being put on cigarette ads that proclaims how unhealthy smoking is. Smoking bans are widespread in many parts of the United States but they’ve been passed at the city and state levels.

Thanks Mr Powell; it’s fair enough if it causes harm to others, but i’m glad to hear there’s at least sense coming from your country on these pages, and in other contributors (which of course means America in general). I’m glad to hear it’s being kept at state level. It keeps the choice more individual. I was merely thinking that it’s another angle to control if you legalise a substance then lambast the other ingredients required to make it and therefore end up with public bans on it anyway. Again I say thanks for your help. Just keep it in mind, if Obama (I’ve seen two spellings of his name in the news; I hope this the correct one) fails the people may want to hear someone else voice and Dr Paul certainly puts the sense that I see in front of me.

Elysiumboy's picture

What other ways have you heard Barack Obama’s name spelled? O’bama?

“Timid men prefer the calm of despotism to the tempestuous sea of liberty.” - Thomas Jefferson

mpowell's picture

I’ve seen it on the news over here, but it was probably no more than a spelling error(oops, sorry! Forgot the spelling: Obhama); I just don’t like spelling someone’s name wrong. Old Andrew Yu-Jen Wang sounds like he’s about to spill the beans on George Bush Junior.

I have to agree that there must be some crime committed for forcing finances in the housing market or in the middle-east. People claim casualties of war and that was certainly the case in the first Iraq war (certainly not WWIII as they tried to portray it), but I don’t remember anyone declaring war on Afghanistan or Iraq the second time; I’m certain they said terrorism.

Elysiumboy's picture

Speaking of Barack Obama:

Barack Obama is a racial-minority individual, and in his heart and mind he inevitably does not endorse hate crimes committed by George W. Bush.

George W. Bush committed hate crimes of epic proportions and with the stench of terrorism (indicated in my blog).

George W. Bush did in fact commit innumerable hate crimes.

And I do solemnly swear by Almighty God that George W. Bush committed other hate crimes of epic proportions and with the stench of terrorism which I am not at liberty to mention.

Many people know what Bush did.

And many people will know what Bush did—even to the end of the world.

Bush was absolute evil.

Bush is now like a fugitive from justice.

Bush is a psychological prisoner.

Bush has a lot to worry about.

Bush can technically be prosecuted for hate crimes at any time.

In any case, Bush will go down in history in infamy.

“GEORGE W. BUSH IS THE WORST PRESIDENT IN U.S. HISTORY” BLOG OF ANDREW YU-JEN WANG
______________________
I am not sure where I had read it before, but anyway, it is a linguistically excellent statement, and it goes kind of like this: “If only it were possible to ban invention that bottled up memories so they never got stale and faded.” Oh wait—off the top of my head—I think the quotation came from my Lower Merion High School yearbook.

This comment is rather strange.

The fact that marijuana prohibition has these budgetary impacts does not by itself mean prohibition is bad policy. Existing evidence, however, suggests prohibition has minimal benefits and may itself cause substantial harm.

Drug Rehab Treatment's picture

Obama is looking to the future and what needs to be change, I’m so glad to have him as president. Legal marijuana has to become a reality in the next 3 years, for too long money and resources have been wasted by the government fighting against it for no justifiable reasons.

what are legal buds's picture

I wouldn’t count on marijuana be legalized in three years, but I am optimistic that we’ll see medical marijuana laws loosened and the overall attitude continue to shift, especially as the younger generation becomes more politically astute. The population of people who are fired up about keeping the drug war on is dwindling.
