Winston Churchill

In Defense of Brandy

President Obama showcased his ignorance of world political history at the G-20 summit in London recently when he made a crack at his political predecessors’ penchant for back-room brandy sessions:

Well, if there’s just Roosevelt and Churchill sitting in a room with a brandy, that’s an easier negotiation. But that’s not the world we live in, and it shouldn’t be the world that we live in.

I realize that every generation likes to think of itself as unique and facing problems their ancestors did not. It’s the easiest way to excuse failure. No one will blame a world leader for poorly handling a challenge that the world has never seen.

Obama Gives Gordon Brown DVDs and Toy Helicoptors

While watching Glenn Beck on Monday, I learned an interesting news tidbit that I really haven’t heard too much about elsewhere or since. British Prime Minister Gordon Brown visited Washington last week—his first visit (also the first of any world leader) to the White House since Obama took office. Since Theodore Roosevelt and Lord Salisbury crafted the Hay-Pauncefote Treaty in 1901, the U.S.

The Bailout Only Delays Judgment Day

My friend Matt Chancey has written another great letter summarizing why this bailout must be stopped.  I encourage you to take the time to read his wise words and then get on the phone and demand that your Congressperson take the novel approach of actually representing his or her constituents’ wishes.  You can find your Congressperson’s contact info at track.nocashfortrash.org.

Dear friends,

First of all, I apologize for contacting you again in connection with this bailout nonsense.

But this is a very important issue—one that sets a dangerous precedent from which many generations of Americans unborn will suffer.

Of course, most politicians don’t care. I believe it was Winston Churchill who said that “a politician cares about the next election, but a Statesman cares about the next generation.”

Have you ever wondered in the last few days about all the rush to get this legislation passed? Remember, less than a month ago we were told that the economy was strong. Senator McCain was raked over the coals a couple of weeks ago because he maintained that the economy was still strong. He had to issue a quick retraction after a media outcry.

I think there are three categories of politicians who are voting for this bailout:

John Edwards’ Personal Life is His Own

For my first post I thought I would talk about the big media dustup right now, which is John Edwards’ admission to an affair with Rielle Hunter. I had heard rumors about this before the story finally blew up. Pajamas Media’s podcast, “PJM Political,” had a segment on July 30 that focussed on the lack of coverage of the affair. Almost two weeks later, the story has broke out and people are getting worried. Christopher Beam at Slate worried outloud that the scandal may have a Mark Foley effect on the election, and went on to point out that John McCain didn’t have a clean marital history.
