Voter Fraud

Should a libertarian support voter ID laws?

Since 2003 a number of states have passed laws requiring some sort of ID to be shown when a person goes to vote.  Proponents of the laws present them as a way to stamp out voter fraud; opponents decry the laws as a way to prevent minorities or the poor from voting, as they are most likely to not have acceptable ID.  The battles have waged not only in legislatures but in courthouses as well.  Wisconsin’s law was just struck down by a judge and Texas’ law is being challenged by the DOJ.

For a libertarian, it seems like both sides of the argument have been a little disingenuous.  Voter fraud has yet to be shown to be anywhere near as widespread as Republicans would like us to think, though this could be because it has heretofore gone undetected.  And showing a form of basic ID, often provided at no cost to the voter, is a very low bar and one that is gladly accepted when doing numerous other activities - even buying alcohol or getting into a bar.

So we are left to sit outside and try to figure out which side to take.  On one hand, for those libertarians who believe in voting, the integrity of elections is very important.  We need to ensure that elections accurately represent the will of voters.  On the other hand, though, it is important that no one is prevented from voting for illegitimate reasons.  If the laws are an underhanded attempt to disenfranchise certain groups, as opponents say, they are problematic.

Tuesday Will Be Last Electronic Election For VA & MD

In complying with recent state legislation that requires election officials to move their votings systems back towards paper ballots, Tuesday’s election will be the last federal election with a signficant usage of electronic touchscreens.

Goodbye, electronic voting. Farewell, fancy touch screen. Maryland and Virginia are going old school after Tuesday’s election.

Rep. Jim Moran’s son resigns from campaign

Patrick Moran

Yesterday, Matt posted video of James O’Keefe latest video, showing Patrick Moran, son of Rep. Jim Moran (D-VA), bragging about voter fraud. The video immediately setoff a firestorm among conservative bloggers and on social media sites as well as gaining some attention in the mainstream media.

To follow up on Matt’s post, the Washington Post reports that the younger Moran, who was serving as field director for his father’s re-election campaign, resigned shortly after the video came out:

The son of Rep. Jim Moran, D-Va., resigned from his father’s campaign Wednesday after a conservative group released an undercover video in which he discussed a plan to cast fraudulent ballots.
[…]
The resignation came hours after Project Veritas, an organization led by activist James O’Keefe, released a video showing an undercover operative pitching a voter-fraud plan to Patrick Moran. The plan called for casting ballots in the name of 100 voters who were registered but rarely voted.

In the video, Patrick Moran expresses doubts about the plan but eventually tells the undercover volunteer to “look into it.”

In a statement issued Wednesday night, Patrick Moran said, that “at no point have I, or will I ever endorse any sort of illegal or unethical behavior.”

James O’Keefe Exposes Sitting Congressman in Voting Fraud Scheme

James O’Keefe’s team has another incredible piece of journalism out today. Watch below as a Project Veritas reporter is being educated on how to properly commit massive voter fraud by the son of a sitting US Congressman. Patrick Moran, son of Congressman James Moran.

As you can see below, they are discussing the proper ways of forging utility bills and impersonating pollsters, all for the goal of circumventing voter ID laws in Virginia and casting ballots for unsuspecting inactive voters within the state for President Barack Obama. Patrick Moran holds the salaried title of Field Director for his father’s congressional campaign, and assures our reporter that “committee” lawyers will defend his fraud if the forged documents “look good.”

Here is the important part of the transcript. Shocking!

Reporter:   Do you know two people … Can you give me two names to help us with that?  Two names of people who are fervent, who maybe I can trust?

Moran:   I don’t know.  It’s going to be tough.  It’s going to be tough with the … you got to stuff that card.

Reporter:   Okay. He actually double voted in 2008 and got away with it.

Moran:   Did he?

Reporter:   Yeah.

Moran:   (Laughs) So it’s going to be with the new voter ID laws as well…

Reporter:   He’s got a few in D.C. He’s got some in Maryland as well.

Moran:   And I imagine he’ll be using…

Reporter:   You and me.

Moran:   Yeah.  But like utility bills or something like that.  He’ll need bills.  He’ll need something with the name and their address on it.

Election Fraud at Obama’s Organizing for America HQ

UPDATE: According to TPM, the Obama campaign employee involved, Stephanie Caballero, has been fired.

Conservative journalist James O’Keefe and his Project Vertias is back to causing serious headaches for the left. And this latest revelation couldn’t be any more timely.

The new videos show official for President Barack Obama’s re-election campaign helping who she thought was an Obama supporter set herself up to vote more than once in November.

Stephanie Caballero is the regional field director for Obama’s Organizing For America in Houston, Texas. Federal Election Commission documents show, according to Project Veritas, that Caballero is a “salaried employee of the Democratic National Committee.”

Caballero is caught on camera helping the young woman try to vote in Florida and Texas in the upcoming election.

Watch Part 1:

And Part 2:

Just like the damning ACORN videos, I look forward to the left trying to excuse such behavior and accusing James of editing video. But with less than 30 days before the election, Barack Obama’s re-election campaign has serious questions to answer for.

Here’s the latest undercover project from James O’Keefe’s Project Veritas.

Over 750k Pennsylvania voters could be lacking valid ID

Earlier this year, my state of Pennsylvania joined many other states in passing a strict new voter ID law.  Proponents of such laws claim they are merely to ensure voters are who they say they are, and to prevent voter fraud.  This claim has always been a bit questionable.  Voter fraud has never been shown to be that widespread.

Several months ago, I wrote here about my dilemma regarding voter ID laws in general.  At the time I was severely torn as I felt that both sides were making dishonest arguments.  However, in the ensuing months I have been following the Pennsylvania law to some degree.  While it does not affect me personally as I have multiple forms of ID, I’m well aware that the areas that will be most affected will be heavily urban, Democratic-leaning counties like Philadelphia and Allegheny (where Pittsburgh is located).

Now a report is out showing that over 750,000 people in the Commonwealth could be ineligible to vote in November.  According to the report, as many as 18% of Philadelphia residents may lack valid ID.  The actual numbers are likely lower because some of these voters may have non-PennDOT ID’s that qualify.  But either way, there are a lot of voters who otherwise could vote that now can’t.

Top Union Official Caught on Tape Discussing Voter Fraud

His third release in 2 days, investigative journalist James O’Keefe offers evidence that NJEA officials were aware that their office was being used to plant pre-stuffed voting machines in a district tough on Democratics.

Teachers Unions Gone Wild!

In another undercover sting operation, James O’Keefe, of ACORN fame, focuses on the New Jersey teacher’s union and comes away with some disturbing video.  I understand there is more to come.

Update:

Governor Christie’s office has responded by calling the videos “distressing… revealing.”

Update:

Governor Christie himself responds.

NY-23: It’s Over

The Watertown Daily Times is reporting that Bill Owens has a lead in the absentee ballots and cannot be defeated with the remaining votes to be counted.

But this is not before some nasty voter fraud involving planting a virus in some voting machines. Needless to say this needs to be investigated and prosecuted, but do you have any faith in the Obama DOJ doing so?
