Economic Depressions Don’t Exist Under Totalitarian Systems

So contends Lev Nazrozov. He writes:

Out-of-control predatory capitalists have perpetrated a worldwide economic depression. Capitalism’s degenerate character is now extraordinarily visible during this time of multiple crises.

On each side of the page there is a picture of a miserable emaciated proletarian who carries on his back a huge pack of money, with a bourgeois seated atop of the pack and smoking a cigar.

By simply allowing the government to dominate every sector of the polity, by embracing totalitarianism, we might be able to avoid the woes of economic recession? Historical study makes such a conclusion seem ridiculous. While totalitarian economies did not suffer from “depressions”, per se, one could argue that consumers and citizens lived under a system which continuously mimicked the effects of depression.

Rush Limbaugh’s Friendly “Fascism”

Jim Armstrong corrects Rush Limbaugh’s misuse of the term “fascism” in a letter to the editor of Dayton Daily News. Mr. Armstrong writes:

While I’m one who doesn’t listen to Rush Limbaugh very often, I have to take exception to what his defender said in his letter to the editor (“Limbaugh critics fear his threat to liberalism,” May 4). He lumped socialists, communists and fascists together as liberals.

Pro-life for Fetus’, but Pro-death for Criminals, Muslims, and Evil Commies

China’s totalitarian, anti-life abortion policies continue, understandably, to upset Christians in the West. Meanwhile, America’s destructive, anti-life Middle Eastern policy continues to upset Christians in the Middle East. What proves less understandable is the disconnect certain American Christians eagerly draw between the value of a life in embryo and the value of a life once it reaches its mother’s arms.

For the record, the life of a fetus is not more sacred than the life of a human being. Christians who value the lives of fetuses should also value the lives of the people they become. You cannot be pro-life and pro-war without ultimately eviscerating the word “life” for the sake of political preferences. Christians who are “pro-life” must be for human life in all cases.

If John Lennon Could Really Have “Imagined”…

Douglas Gibbs played a little thought experiment with my clouded, pre-caffeinated mind this morning that was so effective, I felt the need to share it. If you harbor a violent distaste for mice, this experiment might be a little risque for you:

When you have mice in the attic, but only a couple, usually it is not a big concern. You set out a trap or two, and hope you catch one. If you never hear them, and they never make an appearance, you pretend they aren’t there. You ignore their existence.

Imagine if the mice could convince you that they weren’t mice at all. How could anything so cute be bad, right? Before you know it, they are sitting around the table having dinner with you, and as long as you don’t call them mice, they are fine with it. They are part of the family.

American Family Law is Anti-family

Stephen Baskerville paints a frightening picture of American family law— a picture that seems to be torn from a book about communism or Nazism. Although I disagree with his designation of family law as “totalitarian”, I think his arguments about the extent to which the government has betrayed American families are quite compelling. Given his personal experiences with the family court system, Baskerville’s opinions cannot be dismissed as abstractions. Baskerville writes:

Why the Islamic Religion is Not “Totalitarian”

The trend of labeling the Islamic religion as “totalitarian” is far too provocative to leave unanswered. Those who argue that Islam, or the Muslim faith, is by its very nature totalitarian turn a semantic gaffe into a pejorative and hostile dogma which, in turn, becomes an article of faith for the avid fans of Fox News. Given the social cost of mobilizing a large segment of the population to fear and abhor Muslims, this error must be addressed.
