Obama’s Surprising Conservatism

It has always seemed apparent to me that on abortion, most Americans are moderate. I think most Americans think some degree of abortion should be available in certain circumstances, but that it should be illegal to perform during the third trimester. I don’t think they agree on the absolutist views of the pro-life and pro-choice activists.

This is the brilliance of Barack Obama’s statement on sexuality during the debate. By saying that it is imperative to express to children that “sexuality is sacred” and that we should not engage in “cavalier activity,” he came across as quite conservative and rational at the same time. John McCain, meanwhile, was huffing and puffing like Al Gore chasing the three little pigs. It’s not included in the below video, but McCain used terms like “pro-abortion” which made him appear radical in contrast with Obama’s call for “common ground.”

A Majority of Americans want Bob Barr in the Debates

A Zogby poll released today shows that American’s want ‘Real Choice’ in the upcoming election. The poll showed that 55% of those polled would like to see Bob Barr in the national debates, with 59% saying they would like to see Ralph Nader in the debates. In response to the outcome of this poll,  John Zogby had this to say:

“This election will be won in the political middle, and independent voters are the major prize up for grabs. It looks like independents want a full debate this fall to get a wider range of views and voices out onto the table.”

Bob Barr Welcomes Election Contest with Barack Obama and John McCain, Urges Weekly Debates

Atlanta, GA — Tonight the Democratic Party effectively finished its nomination process, choosing Sen. Barack Obama as its presidential candidate. Sen. Hillary Clinton fought long and well, helping spur a record voter turnout on the Democratic side. In most any other year she would have been her party’s standard-bearer, but she fell short against Sen. Obama, perhaps the Democrats’ most eloquent proponent of liberalism.
