United Liberty’s Top 10 Stories from 2009

It’s the last day of 2009. We made it through a crazy year that saw liberty put at risk on an all to regular basis. We decided the best way to recap the year was to take ten of 2009’s biggest stories and write a blurb about each one of them (we tried to keep it short and to the point).

Before you continue on, each of us here at UL want to thank you for a great 2009. We appreciate you reading. We’re planning for world domination in 2010 and hope that you’ll join in the fun.

So, here they are in no particular order, United Liberty’s Top 10 Stories from 2009.

Tea Party Movement (Brett Bittner): The wave of “hope” and “change” that swept Barack Obama into the Presidency of the United States closed out 2008 and opened the door to a new movement in American politics, the Tea Party movement.  I believe that his election was merely a catalyst for many groups of a conservative nature and strong views on limited government to unite to form one voice to stand up to the political status quo, calling out Democrats and Republicans alike for their affinity to grow the size of government to a breaking point.

Lindsey Graham Doesn’t Like Libertarians

South Carolina Sen. Lindsey Graham demonstrates why I am not a Republican:

Dr. Paul Discusses the Future of the GOP with Maddow

Dr. Paul continues his call to the GOP to return to their roots of fiscal conservatism and a sensible foreign policy.  What I find disheartening is that it’s obvious that the GOP leadership still does not get it.  As long as they continue to allow the likes of Newt Gingrich, John McCain, Mitt Romney, etc. to remain the face of the Republican party- past leaders whose ideas have been tried and failed- we will remain ineffective and stagnant as a party.  It’s time to allow fresh faces and fresh ideas to come to the forefront if the party is to grow and become a viable force in 2010.

While this interview focuses on South Carolina politics, Governor Sanford answers questions regarding Obama's "spendulous" bill.  Calling the stimulus package a temporary fix, he believes it will create more long-term problems.

Governor Sanford cautions America to reject the stimulus package, citing data from the Congressional Budget office that claims that a slower growth rate in the future will result from the spending bill currently being pushed by Obama.

UPDATE: The Mark Sanford non-story (that is actually a story)

Count me among the apparently small group of people who think the Mark Sanford vacation story has been completely blown out of proportion. I’ll give you the fact that the story is weird, but anyone who has been involved in politics in any capacity knows that it can take a lot out of you, especially if you are as invested as Gov. Sanford was during the most recent session of the South Carolina legislature.

Meeting Governor Mark Sanford

One of the politicans that United Liberty writers consistently speak positively about is the Governor of South Carolina, Mark Sanford.  As one of the newest members of the Alabama Republican State Executive Committee, I had the opportunity to attend a party dinner in Montgomery and the privilege to meet the key-note speaker, Governor Sanford.

There have been assertions from Democrats and Republicans alike that Rush Limbaugh is the current voice of the GOP, but I expressed to Governor Sanford that I disagree.  It is my hope that true, small-government fiscal conservatives such as Mark Sanford will be the prevailing voice now and in the years to come.

Fair-Weather Conservatives

A recent AP story caught my attention: “GOP governors press Congress to pass stimulus bill.” After caving last year to a $700 billion bailout, the Republicans in Congress appear to be standing firm against Barack Obama’s call to flush another $800 billion down the tubes.

By the way, this is one advantage to having Democrat control in Washington– Republicans will vote against many things they would normally support just because Democrats are sponsoring the ideas.

Well, apparently many Republican governors are rushing in to Washington to shore up George Wallace’s maxim that there’s “not a dime’s worth of difference” between the two major parties.

These GOP governors are putting pressure on their colleagues in Congress to support Obama’s bailout and to make sure they get their fair share of the pork.

Sanford Skeptical of Bailout

South Carolina Gov. Mark Sanford is a voice of reason on the latest bailout:

I am worried for our country — not so much because of the tumult in the financial markets but because of the federal government’s response and its implications.
