New Year Predictions by the UL Staff
John Killian
National
* Barack Obama will realize that Congress is not ready to go along with his progressive agenda. Many Southern and rural Midwestern Democrats were elected as pro-life conservative Democrats. Hence, his Freedom of Choice Act (FOCA) will never see the light of day.
* With nervousness on the economy, Obama will not push for Nationalized Health Care. You will see some adding around the edges, but no major increases in federal programs. Obama’s advisers will warn him about the effect of more spending and especially, more taxes on our fragile economy.
McCain Resurgence Plan - $300 Billion for What?
During Tuesday’s debate, John McCain discussed briefly a plan to spend $300 billion taxpayer dollars to transform households in foreclosure into FHA guaranteed fixed-rate mortgages. Yesterday afternoon, he followed it up with an e-mail to supporters (of which, I am not, but I like to keep abreast of general asshattery) that gave us a link to follow to learn more. I took him up on the offer, and I decided to take a look at real numbers to put the plan in perspective, since $300 billion taxpayer dollars is a pretty lofty sum for someone else to promise.
Feds to Bail Out Freddie & Fannie
We all know that the Federal Reserve over-pumped credit in the first five years of this decade and how it resulted in an asset bubble in real-estate, especially the residential and second home markets. Now home prices have dropped nearly 20% in the last three years, 9% of all mortgages are in foreclosure or are late, and the Treasury department’s “solution” is to socialize the loss by bailing out the most reckless market participants.
