Bush Administration

Reid - Make A Choice - Politics or the Constitution?

No matter how you philosophically interpret it, one thing almost all of us can agree on is that the highest law governing this nation is the Constitution. Then why are Harry Reid and other Democrats pushing for a decision that is as unconstitutional as almost anything the Bush administration had done over the last 8 years? It’s simply politics.

While most wanted Gov. Blagojevich to refrain from making an appointment for US Senate to replace Senator Obama, everyone agreed that he does have the right under the US Constitution and Illionis law to do so, as he has yet to be impeached. And, so he did. His choice? Roland Burris, who will become the only African American in the US Senate. But too bad for Burris — Reid and fellow Democrats do not want him seated.

Introducing “The Change Gauge”

As part of my contribution to United Liberty, I plan to write an ongoing column called “The Change Gauge.”

The purpose of the column will be straightforward: to systematically highlight instances where Obama administration policies are not changes from the status quo, but rather “more of the same.”

While I have little doubt that President Obama will support many policies that differ from those of the Bush administration, I think it’s valuable for readers – liberal, conservative, and libertarian alike – to be aware of policies that harmfully perpetuate the status quo.

Great Quote by Bill O’Reilly

The left screamed about the Bush administration using fear. It’s being used again in this same way—to get packages through Congress. The same way Bush and Cheney did it, now Obama and Biden are doing it. You don’t hear a word from the left. I mean, I’m sitting there going, ‘Am I in the Twilight Zone here?’

There’s no denying that the Bush Administration used policies of fear in an inappropriate manner to convince Americans that it was necessary to allow our civil rights to be ignored and abused in order to provide security for our nation.  But O’Reilly is correct- using these same tactics in order to pass the largest spending bill in history is equally reprehensible.

Former Clinton Deputy Attorney General Tapped by Obama

Obama’s apparent Attorney General pick follows a pattern of tapping established Democrats and veterans of the Clinton administration:

WASHINGTON (CNN) — Former Clinton Deputy Attorney General Eric Holder is President-elect Barack Obama’s choice for the position of attorney general, according to two prominent Democrats involved in transition matters.

Holder, who is still being vetted, has indicated he will accept the job if it is offered, the sources said.

If confirmed, Holder would be the first African-American to lead the Justice Department.

Agreement on Bailout

Guard your wallet, negotiators in Congress have reached an agreement:

Congressional leaders and the Bush administration agreed Sunday on the main elements of a $700 billion bailout for the financial industry, paving the way for swift enactment of the largest government intervention in markets since the Great Depression.

Negotiators sought to iron out the final shape of the legislation and it still had to be reviewed by House Republicans, whose fierce opposition to a federal rescue nearly torpedoed an emerging bipartisan pact late in the week. Officials in both parties said they hoped for a House vote Monday.

You can read more about the proposal here.

The Bailout- Both Evil and Stupid!

The late Samuel Francis stated that the United States has a two-party system, the Stupid Party and the Evil Party. Occasionally, you find a bi-partisan effort and when you do so, you can count on that proposal being both stupid and evil. I am incensed that Washington power-brokers have come together to bail out the greed of both big business and big government. Noted economist Jim Rogers has said that this bailout would make our economy more communistic than that of Red China. Do we really want that much more infusion of government into our economy? Years ago, I heard Congressman Phil Crane state that Government does nothing well. While observers should have noted the failure of statist systems and the growth of free market economies, our nation promises more from government. How blind do our leaders need to be before they realize that government spending is breaking the taxpayer and damaging the economy.

Please give careful attention to the wise warnings of my friend Matt Chancey.

Dear friends,

The reason I am writing you today is to ask you to join me in contacting your congressman and senators to urge them to reject the $700 billion bailout being rammed through Congress this week.

“The War Within”

Washington Post has a fairly long excerpt of Bob Woodward’s new book, The War Within, available for free on their website. It should provide a decent reminder of how serious the Iraq situation is, as the issue of Iraq seems to have become absent in the political campaign.

The revelation that the United States has been surveilling Nouri al-Maliki, the Iraqi Prime Minister, is significant, though not surprising. The situation we have placed ourselves in the Middle East requires the intense skepticism, distrust and possibly paranoia that leads to spying. At best someone like Iraqi Maliki could be the Mikhail Gorbachev or Nelson Mandela that the Bush Administration badly desires, and at worst he could be working with Iranians to murder American soldiers and turn Iraq into an Iranian satellite state. The latter is an unacceptable possibility.

As long as we are in Iraq, we’re not going to be able to trust the leadership. It’s best that we figure out a way to minimize our role in a realistic fashion.
