Maybe Germans Did Learn Something From The Weimar Republic

When President Obama arrives in London this week he will meet with the leader of Germany, a nation where his election has brought newfound goodwill towards America; but will the goodwill be enough to force the hands of Germany to conform to Washington’s desires for additional stimulus and bailouts? If the latest media reports, which point towards an Administration attempting to dial down expectations, are any indication, then the answer is most likely a soft no.

The NYT is reporting that little ground is expected to be made in regards to additional German stimulus, with Chancellor Angela Merkel expected to cite fiscal discipline as a reason for German non-cooperation with President Obama’s Administration on the issue-

German Chancellor Angela Merkel yesterday criticized the presence of “cheap money” in the United States in recent years, blaming it for the current financial crisis.

Angela Merkel, the German chancellor, turned the tables on her international critics on Wednesday by accusing the US and other governments of making “cheap money” a central tool of their economic management, thus planting the seeds of a similar crisis in five years.

Among all of the Heads of State, Ms. Angela Merkel is the only one with the courage to denounce the policies of the world’s most powerful central bankers, Ben Bernanke, Mervyn King, and Jean-Claude Trichet. Bertrand Benoit’s piece in today’s Financial Times describes the important ending of her otherwise uninteresting speech Wednesday.

She gave “a vitriolic attack on the world’s three mightiest central banks”—something which she has never done in the past. People who know her well confirm that it was no slip of the tongue, that she is always careful to mean what she says and say what she means. She said that she is “sceptical” about the powers of the US Fed to control the flood of purchasing media and credit they continue to create, alongside their European counterparts.
