The Government is Bound to Disappoint You

With California Proposition 8’s passage, we have seen a huge surge of discontent with government and the supposed “democratic” system.

Prop. 8’s passage strikes to the core of the problem with “group rights”. It demonstrates the dangers of moving away from our Republic governance and calls into question the true role of our government altogether.

A marriage should be between consenting adults, performed and executed in whatever arrangement they deem appropriate.

We all have the individual right to life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness. Regardless of our sexual orientation.

If you just lost your right to marry the person you love, why continue to recognize the government as a mandatory third party in your relationship?

Is Ron Paul’s R”3VOL”ution Dead?

It seems that the wholesale libertarian message doesn’t resonate with the American people. Many liberal Democrats love civil liberties and liberal groups such as the ACLU have been powerful forces for advancing same-sex marriage rights, prisoner rights, free speech and religious freedom. Conservative Republicans don’t so much like the whole civil liberties thing, and, given their blatant corporate advocacy, are no longer legitimate advocates of economic freedom.

On Obama’s Win

As I write this, I am in a dorm room on the campus of California State University, in Hayward, California. There is cheering, chanting, yelling, cars honking and even fireworks. There is a heavy black population here, and I can imagine that for them there is much elation in the predictable and yet also surprising election of Barack Obama as president.

The possibility of a collective African American uplift puts a smile on my face. I grew up with the spectre of racism, attending the Seattle Public Schools during a period of enforced racial quotas and weathered racial anger at a heavily black middle school. To be able to point and say that we have finally fully broken open the race barrier is amazing. Maybe we’re finally fulfilling Martin Luther King Jr.’s dream.

The Odd Lies of David Price, Part I

As Martin posted earlier, the Price campaign has sent out an email attacking B.J. and Ron Paul. The email was, quite frankly, dishonest, offensive, and divisive. Clearly, Congressman Price has ignored the call of his party’s Presidential Nominee, Barack Obama, for an elevated trans-partisan discourse and approach to politics.

What $637,000 Will Buy

It turns out that Congressman David Price (B.J. Lawson’s opponent in this year’s election) has some very good friends in the financial sector, which has given his campaigns a whopping $637,000 over his career, more than 2/3 of which has come from financial PACs. Just this year, the financial sector has contributed about $57,000 to his campaign, with 65% coming from PACs.

Bay Area Mom Challenges the Establishment

As a candidate for school board in the Bay Area suburb of Hayward, Maribel Heredia may not seem like a figure of national importance. However, Heredia’s presence in the Hayward school board race is a demonstration of the push for change that has taken the country by storm.

Elections, And Why The American Economy Will Collapse

I know what you’re thinking: man that Pete is a positive guy. I like to describe myself as realistic, with a bit of fatalism throw in. Either way, I find it hard to look at the economic landscape and have any hope. It is especially dreadful when politicians have to get re-
elected, AND said politicians consult certain “economists”.

Economists have for years looked at what is happening in a society and sought to come up with solutions as to how an economic crisis can be “fixed”. The problem is, like in all fields, you have good economists, and you have the not so good (The latter seem to be the ones that always find their way onto the public payroll).

In extremely broad terms economists can be split into two categories:

1. The “good” economist traces what a policy can do not only in the present, but
in the future; AND what it does for not only one segment of society,
but the whole.

2. The “bad” economist does the exact opposite; they examine only what
will fix the present issue and usually concentrate on only one segment of
the population.

If you are a student of American history your eyes should be opening as to which economist is most often chosen by our elected officials. The real question is “why”?

Well, why wouldn’t a politician pick economist #2?

Blago is Going to Appoint Senate Seat Anyway

Will the Democrats fight amongst themselves this close to the inauguration? I expect that we will continue to hear less on this story - and more of the Rick Warren daytime TV drama.

CHICAGO (AFP) — The corruption-tainted governor of Illinois was expected to appoint a replacement Tuesday to the senate seat of president-elect Barack Obama, a source close to the governor told AFP.

A defiant Rod Blagojevich, who is accused of trying to sell the seat to the highest bidder, was expected to name former Illinois attorney general Roland Burris, 71, to the seat, the source said on condition of anonymity.

Let Not Your Heart Be Troubled

My fellow freedom lovers,

Let not your heart be troubled.  Those of us who are students of history do not lose hope for we…

[Understand] the magnificent rewards of a free society [which] makes us unbashful in its promotion, [for we] fully [realize] that maximum wealth is created and the greatest chance for peace comes from a society respectful of individual liberty.  Patriotism - Ron Paul - 5/22/07
