Tips for the Republicans
The GOP chief knows the gig is up:
In a frank and private memo sent today to Republican National Commitee members, the RNC chairman acknowledges that the GOP has grown too addicted to ideology, places politics before policy, and is bereft of ideas — and that it’s imperative that the party shift towards a genuine effort to develop concrete policy solutions to people’s problems in order to rescue itself.
I have a few quick ideas:
Emphasize education - Most African-Americans consistently tell pollsters that they support vouchers. However, their “leadership” opposes vouchers. Emphasize how deep in bed with the teacher’s unions the Democratic Party is. Make this a visible part of the Republican platform so that people realize that Republicans are better on education policy. If played right, it could be as powerful of a draw for Republicans as health care has been for Democrats.
Get a new face - Barack Obama ran against two candidates, John McCain and Hillary Clinton, who were familiar faces of Baby Boomer dominated American politics. The Republican Party needs a new face that better represents Generation X and younger voters. Louisiana Governor Bobby Jindal is probably the best chance for this.
Emphasize peace, liberty and prosperity - The sitting Republican president seems more concerned with bailing out failed businesses than helping lift up average Americans. One of John McCain’s economic advisors called the country a “nation of whiners” in the midst of a colossal economic crisis. Is it any wonder Americans don’t think the GOP cares about them? Republicans need to emphasize the importance of a prosperous America.
There was also a time when there were peace-minded Republicans. President Dwight D. Eisenhower refused to engage in a military confrontation in Vietnam and his Vice President Richard Nixon ran on a platform of ending the war that Kennedy and Johnson started. After years of a Republican who described himself as a “war president,” it’ll take a lot to bring back the peaceful Republican.
