Cato Ad on Climate Change: So Much for Consensus

The Cato Institute is running another ad in newspapers disputing a position of the Obama Administration, this time taking on global warming:

We, the undersigned scientists, maintain that the case for alarm regarding climate change is grossly overstated. Surface temperature changes over the past century have been episodic and modest and there has been no net global warming for over a decade now. After controlling for population growth and property values, there has been no increase in damages from severe weather-related events. The computer models forecasting rapid temperature change abjectly fail to explain recent climate behavior. Mr. President, your characterization of the scientific facts regarding climate change and the degree of certainty informing the scientific debate is simply incorrect.

The ad has the signatures of more than 100 scientists.

Great Ad. The global warming truthers are the same types wailing over some human catastrophe or another and don’t see the irony in the fact that humans are the only species that needs to burn stuff to survive. More people, more burned stuff; fewer people, less burned stuff.

We should show them a real “hockey stick” graph that shows total world population figures over the past 2000 years. If anthropogenic climate change is factual at all, then population growth is going to swamp any and all efforts humans might take to curtail it. If man is truly causing global warming, then we all could do the planet a favor by dying. I propose that we start culling from the herd those who believe in this nonsense most fervently. Their “faith” should compel them to go along with the plan, should it not?

A quibble: The editor in me wants to scream about the “over 100 scientists” part of the post. Has the proper phrase, “more than,” completely disappeared?
