Save the Date, Save the Country
Despite a hard-fought campaign, and despite the help of thousands of people across our country, our Congressional campaign in North Carolina’s 4th District suffered a decisive defeat. We received many compliments on our campaign, which featured a well-attended debate at UNC, a brief but focused media campaign (see Your Money at Work, and Your Money at Work Part 2), fifty thousand copies of our United States Constitution, and hundreds of great volunteers across the district engaging voters at the polls. While compliments don’t win elections, I was proud to represent the cause of a Constitutional federal government, and principled government that upholds the rights of individual Americans.
So-called “Republicans” across the country received, generally, a thrashing. We lost our senior Senator from North Carolina, who was missing-in-action from the state, as well as slavishly following orders from the neoconservatives enslaving our nation for the benefit of its corporate masters. The final straw was her campaign’s inexplicable “Godless” ad that accused her opponent of “pal-ing around” with atheists. In the midst of the largest financial crisis since the Great Depression, you’d think her campaign would focus on the issues. It was instructive that voters rejected this senseless attack, perhaps calling to mind Jesus’ instructions in Matthew 22:21: “Give to Caesar what is Caesar’s, and to God what is God’s.” But I digress.
So what’s next? With Caesar and his bankster friends well on their way to collapsing our country, and Hope N. Change showing that neoliberalism is just neoconservatism followed by a “D”, how can we work for real, lasting change?
Republicans in North Carolina are 32% of the electorate, and in the 4th District they are only 27%. Does our state need more Republicans?
Well, not really. We don’t need more Republicans like we’ve been getting. But we desperately need more thinking Americans concerned about good government stepping up and getting active — and we can start by getting involved at the grassroots.
How do we do that? Simple. Just show up. It starts at the precinct meeting, then the county convention, then the district convention, and finally the state convention. Bring a few friends along with you to each of these events, volunteer, elect principled people into leadership positions, appoint principled people to committees, and with some effort we’ll end up with a party organization that is willing to be honest with itself, and the American people.
Yes, there will be confrontation. Inexplicably, the innumerates driving the bus off the cliff with the country inside are in no hurry to give up the wheel. They’re still admiring the scenery on the way down, and it hasn’t yet occurred to them that it’s not the fall that kills you, but the sudden stop at the bottom.
But here’s the thing — there are relatively few people at the wheel. We have the numbers to gently remove them, and either try and stop the bus or perhaps start passing out parachutes.
So if you’re in North Carolina’s 4th District, start by saving these dates:
- Chatham County: Precinct meetings at 6:30 PM on Tuesday, March 10 at the District Courtroom in Pittsboro. County convention to follow at 7:00 PM.
- Orange County: Precinct meetings at 9:00 AM on Saturday, March 7 at the Big Barn Convention Center. County convention to follow.
- Durham County: Pending, but will be on a Saturday in March.
- Wake County: Precinct meetings at 7:00 PM [UPDATE: incorrectly listed as 8:00 AM] on Thursday, February 19. Locations depend on State House district. County convention on Thursday, March 12.

Great to have you back, BJ! I’ve saved the date, and I’m bringing friends!
I’m glad you’re back in the saddle (hopefully still sane…and married), ushering people to the precinct, district and state conventions…where overwhelming numbers are what’s needed to unseat the current “leaders”. I also appreciate you mentioning is won’t take all that many people to make an impressive takeover happen. You are a true leader, a person who sees a problem and has the guts and brains to take action.
There is not a dimes worth of difference between the DEMS and the GOP and at the end of the day they are in the same spot but get there differently. This country needs a solid third party wich im hoping is the LIBITARIAN party.
Clear thinking people with integrity (like BJ) are exactly what our culture, and governments need.
I must say, though, I’ve always been puzzled as to why the people I find most in touch with reality associate themselves with a party at all.
After all, the party association is a label which makes it easier for people to apply prejudice (in its literal meaning). While I understand that these prejudices can work as an advantage in some situations, it seems that in the current culture, people won’t listen to even the most well reasoned arguments if the message is delivered by someone whose label differs from their own.
It seems a new label, without the well established connotations, may be more appropriate. Care must then be taken to defend the defining attributes of this new party.
BJ,
Great to hear from you again. We may not have sent Price to the bleachers this time around, but you got pretty far for a first time candidate.
When does your governor come up for reelection?

BJ,
Any plans to run again, or run for a different office??
BJ, it is so good to hear from you and know you’re ready to keep up the fight! Hope you, Jo Lynn, and family had an awesome, restful holiday season!
Have you considered running for a position in the party? With folks like you at the wheel, as you say, the gop would be well on the way to becoming something meaningful instead of the joke it’s been for so long. I’m ready for precinct meetings!!
