Meeting Governor Mark Sanford
One of the politicans that United Liberty writers consistently speak positively about is the Governor of South Carolina, Mark Sanford. As one of the newest members of the Alabama Republican State Executive Committee, I had the opportunity to attend a party dinner in Montgomery and the privilege to meet the key-note speaker, Governor Sanford.
There have been assertions from Democrats and Republicans alike that Rush Limbaugh is the current voice of the GOP, but I expressed to Governor Sanford that I disagree. It is my hope that true, small-government fiscal conservatives such as Mark Sanford will be the prevailing voice now and in the years to come.
Governor Sanford has consistently stood against the pork passed by South Carolina state legislators, for the the freedom of school choice and for the need for states to become less dependent on the federal government, returning to the rugged independence that made this nation great.
During his speech at dinner, Governor Sanford encouraged Republicans to remember and return to the roots that defined us for so many years- small government, low taxes, fiscal responsibility and respect for the rule of law. Describing our current economy as “perilous times”, Gov. Sanford said,
I believe we’re at that “gut-check” point as to where we go next as a civilization.
The question before us is whether we continue down the road to socialism, becoming more dependent on government to meet our needs and guide our steps. This is not the path the Founding Fathers intended us to follow and they gave countless warnings against it, knowing that the allure of an equality mandated by the state would be a mirage that many would find hard to resist.
Governor Sanford’s message to us was that it is not to late to change course, but it would take soul-searching and the courage to admit that the Republican party has allowed too much to slip past and even, in some cases, aided and abetted, the federal government’s descent on the slippery slope to socialism.
I want to thank Mark Sanford for having the courage to stand before a room full of people and in the most gracious manner possible, tell us it’s time to do a “gut-check” and make some tough decisions. But knowing that making the right decisions will lead to a better future for the coming generations of Americans, the choice is obvious and the path is clear.

Governor Sanford is in my opinion the best elected official in the nation who is nationally known. Lets hope the Republican Party will listen to him.
I sure do see him quoted in the NYT, AP, WSJ, etc alot nowadays. Very promising.
It’s good to hear about a politician doing a good job. Pete DeFazio in Oregon is pretty good too, as is recently elected Democrat Alan Grayson. Grayson gave Fed officials a grilling when they refused to come clean about where the bailout money has gone. Dennis Kucinich and Ron Paul are pretty good too, of course.
“Timid men prefer the calm of despotism to the tempestuous sea of liberty.” - Thomas Jefferson
It’s interesting that Ron Paul once, while campaigning in South Carolina in 2007, suggested that Gov. Sanford would make a good Vice President, pointing to the possibility that, had a miracle occurred giving Ron Paul the Republican presidential nomination last year, Sanford might have been at the top of his list of potential running mates.
