Chart of the Day: Who is to blame for FY 2009 deficits?

Dan Mitchell points out that the deficits from FY 2009 are almost entirely on George W. Bush, not Barack Obama. According to Mitchell, spending added by Obama only increased the budget by “amounted to just a tiny percentage of the FY2009 total – about $140 billion out of a $3.5 trillion budget.”

Any guesses what next year’s chart will look like? While this is true, this can be attributed to gridlock in the Senate.

Jason, just out of curiosity what’s the FY 2000 data look like?

Would it look like this chart only we substitute Clinton for Bush?

One thing to note here is that Obama was also acting as a Senator from Illinois until Election Day, so he does bear some responsibility for his “present” votes since 2004, where he had the opportunity to vote against the spending.
