Appleseed: Aiming to Bear Fruit

The only thing missing from Fred’s shooting range in North Carolina is John William’s score from The Patriot.  You’ve got the rag-tag assortment of American everymen, you’ve got the red coat targets, and you’ll even feel a little of the same sense of urgency the American militiamen must’ve felt in the mid-1770’s.

Spending a weekend at an “Appleseed” rifleman school is not only a wise investment of money and time, it’s a whole lot of fun!  Hosted by the Revolutionary War Veteran’s Association (RWVA), the Appleseed program is acutely in touch with the importance marksmanship can have on history, as they refer to April 19, 1775 (the day of the “shot heard ‘round the world”) as the day “marksmanship met history, and heritage was born.”

The weekend is split between shooting lessons and talks on the historical significance of the British offense, Paul Revere’s ride, and the 14,000 militiamen who answered the call before the day was out.  Not only are you improving your AQT (Army Qualification Test) score, you’re learning about why we value the right to bear arms so dearly, and what a 14,000 man response said about our love and passion for liberty.

That right only counts when it counts.  Our founders had just finished fighting a successful rebellion against the world’s sole superpower of the day, the first of its kind in history.  They knew that the easiest way to dominate a population was to disarm them first, as things have a much higher likelihood of going your way if you’re the one holding all the guns.  Guns are for using, citizens.  They are for protecting the farm from wolves, just as they’re for protecting your family from red-coated oppressors  and your inalienable rights from usurpation.  By whom, it would seem, is negligible.

There is a vision that is Appleseed.  That vision belongs to a man with a voice, who is determined through his own action to make a lasting impact in this country, and I believe he is succeeding.  The Appleseed project has high aims, especially the one about doubling its size and scope annually.  I see Fred’s vision being fulfilled.  I hear Fred’s voice echoing from around the nation.  One man can do quite a lot, you see.

Go to an Appleseed.  Become an Appleseed yourself.  Share this exciting experience with a loved one for a quick get-away weekend trip, or grab a friend and hit the road.  Whatever it takes, just remember that when the time comes, and the sky hits the ground, you’re going to be one of two things: a guy with a gun, or a rifleman.  The difference could very well end up being your life.

I went to an Appleseed for the first time last month. All I can say is you will be hard pressed to find better quality training anywhere for at any price. I kinda feel dirty after only paying $70 for two full days of superb marksmanship training.
