Your Taxpayer Dollars At Work

Wherever you come down in the abortion debate, it is an outrage that our taxpayer dollars are paying for this. In the list of spending cuts—defunding Planned Parenthood should be at the very top.

Yeah, okay, we get it… You don’t like Planned Parenthood and you’re against abortion. My question for you is, what would your alternative to abortion be? Please don’t answer “adoption”, because while that’s a noble sentiment, it’s just not realistic.
Abstinence obviously isn’t the answer, because if it was, there would be much less need for abortions.
Birth control can, and does, fail. If it didn’t, again, there would be less need for abortions.
So, what is the answer? You want them defunded, but in the grand scheme of things, what would that really accomplish?
Before you go off on me, you should know that I’m a Conservative Republican.
When did I say I was against abortion? I never said anything of the sort. My beef with Planned Parenthood actually has little to do with abortion and everything to do with them being taxpayer-funded. If they want to raise private money to exist and do what they do, then go for it. I don’t believe *my money* should be used to pay for any organization like this—whether I like the organization or not. I personally wouldn’t support Planned Parenthood because of the kind of thing you see in the video which really isn’t about abortion, it’s about human trafficking.
As to your question about alternatives to abortion, I prefer to focus on the pregnancy prevention angle. You say birth control can, and does fail, but it actually doesn’t—at least not very often, and not when used correctly. Medical technology has advanced in areas like the IUD which is implanted in the uterus and is as effective as a tubal ligation, and the Depo shot which is taken once every three months. I realize this is not the solution for everyone, but I believe that educating young women about different alternatives and making those alternatives accessible is the key to preventing pregnancy.
IUD’s can become dislodged. Granted, it’s rare, but it does happen.
As for Depo, there is a problem of bone thinning associated with using it. I know, because I have the bone loss.
No solution is fool proof. It’s just not going to happen. But IUD’s, shots, pills, Nuvaring—there are plenty of options. I’m not arguing for the criminalization of abortion—I just don’t think the government should pay for them.
Brooklyn, you should do a little more research before you call for defunding. First of all, this tape is pretty obviously edited. As we found with the unedited tapes from the phony ACORN controversy, the people putting these tapes out are editing them and basically inventing a story out of nothing.
Likewise, the facts of this case completely demolish your point. These people went to P.P. offices in 5 states, and in all of them the offices called the FBI to report the encounters. This is the only place where someone did anything like this, and she was immediately fired when it came to light. After this encounter, the woman in the tape reported it to her superiors and they called the FBI immediately.
Based on those facts alone, it’s pretty clear that this isn’t what “our taxpayer dollars are paying for.” Your anti-choice agenda has clouded your judgement on this.
Jim, first of all, I don’t know how I could have been clearer—this is not about abortion. I don’t know where you get that I am anti-choice. Second, it doesn’t matter whether the video is real or manufactured. I would call for the defunding of PP anyway. I don’t believe the government should fund them—not just PP, but any non profit organization whether I agree with what they are doing or not Nowhere in the Constitution does Congress have the power to take my hard earned money and fund non profits. If PP wants to raise private money to do what they do, then go for it.
Nice try, Brooklyn, but the whole point of your post was clearly to call for defunding PP because our taxpayer dollars were supposedly going to the things depicted in the videos. We know for a fact that’s not true. Your newly-expressed larger principle on funding of non-profits was never raised in your post at all. Why can’t you just admit you got hoodwinked?
Jim the point of my post was to highlight the crap going on at Planned Parenthood and highlight the fact that our tax dollars are paying for it. I don’t believe the government should be funding Planned Parenthood or most of the stuff they fund for that matter. A simple Google search on me would verify that. I write about the ways the government wastes our money all the time. I don’t know whether the video is 100% unedited or not, but it doesn’t really matter. Even if the girl called the proper authorities, I still don’t believe my taxpayer dollars should fund it. End of story. I think you are the one who has an agenda, and I don’t have the time, nor the desire to keep arguing about it.
It’s obviously your prerogative to try to revise the point of your post after the fact, but at least acknowledge that you’re doing it because you got the story wrong initially. You wrote as if what’s depicted in the video is par for the course at PP and used that as an excuse to call for no government funding. The facts show that you’re wrong about that. You can call for defunding for all sorts of reasons, but you didn’t. Your post called for defunding because of this fraudulent video. That’s an embarrassment on your part, plain and simple.
