75% of Americans Oppose Bank Nationalization
A poll came out today that should give those who believe in economic freedom a slight bit of hope: The public support for radically socializing the financial system in the name of saving it is dismally low. From Today’s Rassmussen Reports-
All sorts of big government solutions are being proposed to combat the country’s economic troubles, but Americans are clear on one thing: 75% say the federal government should not take over the U.S. banking system.
Only nine percent (9%) think nationalization of America’s banks is a good idea, and 16% are undecided in a new Rasmussen Reports national telephone survey.
Support for nationalization is so weak that almost a super-majority of Democrats are opposed to the idea-
Fourteen percent (14%) of Democrats support a government takeover of U.S. banks, but only six percent (6%) of Republicans agree. Eighty-eight percent (88%) of Republicans and 62% of Democrats are opposed.
And the very electorally important middle ground of the electorate support for nationalization is so low that it makes Bush’s approval ratings look marvelous-
Among those not affiliated with either of the major political parties, six percent (6%) favor a government takeover, and 78% disagree.
While I do admit I wish the general public would become even more libertarian on practically all issues, this data is encouraging. It seems our elected officials are promoting radical policies significantly outside the mainstream of American ideology.
UPDATE:
Found another great piece of data-
While the Obama Administration is pledging up to $2.5 trillion in support for the troubled U.S. financial system, 56% of Americans oppose giving bankers any additional government money or any guarantees backed by the government.
If the Obama Administration and the Democratic Party continue to push these policies, they will be out of power in almost no-time if there is not significant success.

No matter what the polls say, alot of moves that the electorate and even lawmakers wouldn’t support in principle may end up happening for lack of better options.
WHAT A LAUGH AMERICANS ARE SO STUPID THAT 75 PERCENT OF THEM SUPPORTED THE INVASION OF IRAQ SO WE CAN’T DRAW TOO MUCH FROM THIS STUDY I BET 90 PERCENT OF AMERICANS DON’T INDERSTAND WHAT THE WORD NATIONALIZE MEANS
Uh oh! Everyone’s favorite conservative polling outfit now shows more Americans are supporting the stimulus package:

Whatever will the right-wingers do?
I agree. I don’t think most Americans know what it means to nationalize a bank. Secondly, from the cited rasmussen polls, Americans think you can have goverment without paying for it. So Reagan and the Bushes were able to sell the country a phoney bill of goods. So we have folks thinking tax cuts are the solution to everything. That somehow private industry always does everything better than government. How can anyone believe this anymore after the collapse of Wall St. and the banking industry? Could there be any better example of incompetence, recklessness, and lack of concern for the average American or anyone in the world?
