Where Did Pia Varma Come From?

Out of nowhere, my attention was called to the campaign launch video of a candidate in Pennsylvania’s 1st Congressional district.  Admittedly, outside of our interview of Jake Towne, the sitting Senators, and Pat Toomey’s campaign to unseat Arlen Specter, I am not very involved in Pennsylvania’s political activities.

This video was a refreshing surprise when I cam across it last night.  I immediately shared it among some friends, requested an interview for our Liberty Candidate Series of podcasts, and started delving into her campaign page.  I like what I see here, and I do not just mean her appearance…  Her unique approach to writing issue statements and the truth-telling rarity of her videos (there is another one on her YouTube channel, if you are interested) is really a breath of fresh air.

So, now that you have seen her in action, what are your thoughts?  Will this self-named “firebrand” light up Philadelphia’s desire for liberty?

I detect a fair bit of populism here…

And this line stuck out to me far more distinctly than it will to most:

“taking the rights given to us by our Constitution”

I hate hearing that.

That said, I think she may tap into the widespread (and justified) mistrust of Washington DC, and appears committed to reducing the government, not reforming it. Those are positives in my book…

You’re not the first person to mention that about her. I don’t like it either. We’re working on a podcast with her soon.

I disagree that it’s a populist message. Most people don’t know or care that rights are things we are born with.

A populist message would be to say that your ‘wants’ are your ‘rights.’ Example: healthcare, a big house, college tuition, etc.

My reason for posting was that she came out of nowhere, and I want to further investigate her positions and policies. I think it’s helpful to garner feedback from others to get a multi-angle view of someone without a political past to examine.

I’m not saying this is a bad thing, but do you think MOST people over 25 will watch that video and get it? It seems to be targeted to a very small group.

But who’s watching YouTube? Michael Scott is probably the ceiling age outlier.

If you watch her other speech at the tea party rally, she says (with much inflection in all the right places): “America was conceived in an age of enlightenment … as a constitutional republic .. where laws protecting natural birthrights reign supreme, and no majority is allowed to vote those rights away!”

So she fully understands birthrights and the purpose of the Constution. The mistep in her launch video is probably just a reflection of the general perception that the constitution gives us our rights. She’s one of the most well read people I’ve ever seen grab the mike to speak out like this, and that fact is well represented in her other videos.

Most people don’t understand where their rights come from. They don’t come from the government. You are born with them. (endowed by the Creator) so stop looking towards the government. look to yourself.

And as she says very clearly, ‘no majority can take that away.’

Pia - watched you on TV tonight and you stumbled a little on the issue concerning the War on Terror. The money being spent on their turf should be utilized here setting up our own defense mechanism. Block them on our own turf! You are too young to remember Vietnam but this ‘whatever you call it’ is very similar to the same situation. One week after the underwear bomber incident, Canada invested 1 million dollars on four naked body scanners in the Pearson International Airport.

Make the enemy come to you. Then you have them where you want them!
