Petition Calling for Snowden Clemency Launched by Ron Paul

Two weeks after Edward Snowden was nominated for the 2014 Nobel Peace Prize, - the same award granted to President Barack Obama in 2009 - one day after Intelligence Squared hosted a debate on the motion “Snowden was Justified,” and on the same day that the European Parliament voted against granting asylum to the whistleblower, former Texas congressman Ron Paul launched a petition demanding clemency for Edward Snowden.

According to the petition’s official page, Snowden’s asylum in Russia should expire at the end of July. On Ron Paul Channel’s website, one can read that “Snowden sacrificed his livelihood, citizenship, and freedom by exposing the disturbing scope of the NSA’s worldwide spying program.”

According to Judge Andrew P. Napolitano, Edward Snowden’s actions were in line with the oath to uphold the Constitution that he subscribed to, which is the same oath that powerful critics of Snowden, such as Rep. Mike Rogers (R-MI), also swore to uphold.

As one of the few agents willing to bring to light the kind of knowledge that the American people are entitled to have access to, the whistleblower gave up on much of what he had accomplished in life. He left behind the possibility of living a potentially comfortable and happy life in America with his family and friends to ensure the public was made aware of the government’s attacks on the Fourth Amendment. The press in a free country, Judge Napolitano stated, “is the eyes and ears of the public.”

Snowden took the NSA spying information to the eyes and the ears of the public to make sure it paid attention.

Regardless of where you stand on the issue, it’s important to understand that those who have cooperated with Edward Snowden and Snowden himself have helped the nation to become aware of what the government is doing without its consent.

Whether Snowden will be judged as a traitor or a hero is still up in the air, but we are much better equipped to fight the nearly uncontrollable growth of the state now that we know what we are up against, precisely because of his revelations.
