Democrats Take Mythbusters Approach to Facts

Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid has really sunk to new lows with his accusations of Mitt Romney not paying taxes for ten years. Supposedly, this is based on an “unnamed Bain insider” who saw Mitt’s returns, but as Doug Mataconis has noted, that’s next to impossible and is utter rubbish. (John Stewart joined in as well, as Jason Pye wrote last week.)

Now, we have Reid’s chief of staff calling Republicans “cowards” and “henchmen” for calling out Reid:

The war over Mitt Romney’s tax returns is getting more bitter by the moment, with a top aide to Senate Majority Harry Reid blasting Republicans as “cowards” and “henchmen” for their attacks on the Nevada Democrat.

“They’re a bunch of cowards, and they’re avoiding the issue,” said David Krone, Reid’s chief of staff, in an interview with POLITICO on Sunday night. “Lindsey Graham, Reince Priebus — they’re a bunch of henchmen for Romney, and they’re all reading off the same talking points. They couldn’t hold a candle to Harry Reid.”

Krone added: “What Harry Reid said is the fact of what he was told. To turn it around, all their childish rants this weekend about calling Reid a ‘liar’ and all that, it just shows you how scared they are that Harry Reid was telling the truth.”

So let me get this straight. Reid makes up a totally baseless accusation—because, as I already said, this is totally bunk—and when Republicans call him out on it, they’re “cowards” and “avoiding the issue”?

Look, I’m no fan of Mitt—and I think he should probably just release the tax returns to make everybody shut up already—but this is a totally new low. This is what I call the Mythbusters approach to facts, which can be summed up by a hilarious line: “I Reject Your Reality And Substitute My Own.”

Don’t think I’m knocking the Mythbusters. On their show, it was cute and funny, and Adam Savage is a really awesome guy. It was okay there; that was an innocent subject. But here, it is most certainly not innocent. It is slander and libel. It is a totally dishonest political attack.

You don’t get to make up your own reality and pretend it is really happening, Harry. Nor do you get to call “cowards” people who are calling you out on your own bunk, Krone. I know Washington is full of obfuscation, misdirection, and just plain out old lies, but this is just low. Even Washington should draw a line somewhere. And no amount of misdirection can help Reid or his staff avoid that.
