The Bain of Obama’s Existence

Barack Obama

With three and a half months to go until the election, the Obama campaign team is becoming more desperate; unsurprising considering Obama is in a statistical dead heat with Mitt Romney despite having so many things going for him (the power of presidential incumbency, the desire of many Americans to see the first black president be successful, the vast majority of the national media solidly in his camp, etc.). Unfortunately for the Obama campaign, the continued bad economic news and a series of unforced verbal errors by Obama has made the going even tougher for Obama.

The latest low for the Obama campaign came recently when Obama surrogate, deputy campaign manager Stephanie Cutter, accused Mitt Romney of being a felon IF he misrepresented his role at Bain Capital while signing SEC (Securities and Exchange Commission) documents subsequent to his departure. This is a cheap political move, meant to plant the seed of corruption in voters’ minds, regardless of whether the claim is true. This particular one has already been debunked repeatedly, but in keeping with the “Big Lie” propaganda technique written of in Hitler’s book, Mein Kampf, the Obama campaign team keeps throwing it out.

From the Washington Post FactChecker website: “We’ve gone over this problem with the Obama campaign before, awarding three Pinocchios to a January memo the team released blaming Romney for job losses and bad deals that took place after the former executive had stopped working for Bain. . . . These facts essentially exonerate Romney from allegations that he was responsible for any outsourcing, bad deals and layoffs that occurred with Bain’s companies in the early 2000s.”

The irony here is that many of the decisions at Bain which led to the job losses which Obama accuses Romney of being responsible for (including the job losses at GST Steel) are the result of the man, managing director Jonathon Lavine, who replaced Romney at the helm after Romney left Bain in 1999. You may not know that name, but the Obama team most certainly does. Lavine is one of Obama’s top campaign donation bundlers, bringing in between $100,000 and $200,000 for the 2012 Obama Victory Fund. It would also be relevant to point out that Bain Capital has given Obama just under $120,000 in campaign donations. Oops!

Look, Mitt Romney was not my first choice in 2008, and he was not my first choice in 2012 (anyone to the left of James Madison is not quite conservative enough for me), but the dishonest attempts by Obama and his surrogates to paint Romney as some heartless, dishonest, corrupt villain are ludicrous. Romney is a virtual Boy Scout, especially compared to Obama. He served a two-year, unpaid mission in France for his church. He gave away his inheritance to BYU, the college founded by his church, to endow a school of public management in his father’s name. He married his high school sweetheart, Ann, and started a successful private equity firm, Bain Capital, which allowed Ann to stay home and raise their five boys. Bain had a tremendous record of success under Romney (former President Bill Clinton described it as “stellar”), and unlike Obama, he can truly claim credit for jobs created or saved.

If the failure of certain investments is the threshold for such criticism, then Obama should look at his own record of failure with companies such as Solyndra, Beacon Power, A123 Systems, Ener1, and other green energy companies that are filing for bankruptcy with ever greater frequency. The difference between Obama and Romney is that when Romney’s investments don’t work out, it is not the taxpayers that get stuck with the bill. A wise observer would also note the fact that these “green energy” companies which continue to get billions and billions of taxpayer dollars just happen to be led by people who have donated generously to Obama and his Democrat friends in the past. Surely, that is just coincidence though, right?

Obama vilifies Romney for outsourcing jobs, but ignores his own record in that regard. Billions of dollars of the “stimulus” package were sent overseas to pay for wind turbines from Europe, luxury electric sports cars from Finland, solar panels from China, diesel engines from Thailand, and more. That does not even include the $2 billion Obama gave to Brazil to fund offshore oil drilling, which is mind-boggling since he continues to restrict drilling right here at home, costing America tens of thousands of jobs.

If the media were more interested in unbiased, objective reporting, they’d spend just as much time looking into the past of our current president, a job which they not only failed to do, but actually proactively blocked others from doing during Obama’s first run for president. Not only were the media uncurious about Obama’s past, but they actively helped hide it, as evidenced by the leaked exchanges from JournoList (a private message exchange server for mainstream journalists) which revealed the depths of their corrupt efforts, such as Spencer Ackerman of the Washington Independent, who “urged his colleagues to deflect attention from Obama’s relationship with [Rev. Jeremiah] Wright by changing the subject. Pick one of Obama’s conservative critics, Ackerman wrote, ‘Fred Barnes, Karl Rove, who cares — and call them racists.’” Nope, no media bias here! Move along people, nothing to see!

Unfortunately for those seeking truth and transparency, other than attacking the critics and whistleblowers, most media outlets were not all that interested in some of the more unflattering elements of Barack Obama’s past. They weren’t all that interested in his relationship with Tony Rezko, a man now serving a ten year sentence for his role in facilitating bribery, corruption and kickbacks at the highest levels of Illinois government, and with convicted ex-Governor Rod Blagojevich, who attempted to auction off Obama’s Senate seat to the highest bidder.

Likewise, they seemed indifferent to Obama’s relationship with Bill Ayers and Bernadine Dohrn, co-founders of the domestic terrorism network Weather Underground, a group responsible for the bombing of the NYPD headquarters building, the U.S. Capitol building, the Pentagon, and a police station in San Francisco. Ayers, released on a technicality, actually laughed about getting away with it, later telling the NYT on 9/11 that he wished he had done more. This is the same man who Obama claimed was just a guy from his neighborhood, yet they worked together on several foundations and boards, and Ayers brags about hosting a fundraiser for Obama in his home years ago.

This is the same president, Barack Obama, which brags about cocaine and marijuana use when he was in college, who attended the church of the America-hating, anti-Semitic Reverend Jeremiah Wright for two decades but supposedly never heard him say such things, and the man who promised no lobbyists would work in his administration, and then proceeded to hire dozens from Goldman Sachs alone.

Obama granted waivers for the ObamaCare law to his supporters in the labor unions, he has invoked executive privilege to protect Attorney General Eric Holder from releasing documents relating to the Fast and Furious scandal, which resulted in the deaths of two U.S. law enforcement officers and more than 300 Mexican nationals. He has completely violated established bankruptcy laws in the handling of the GM bankruptcy, been cited for contempt of court for his ongoing de facto moratorium on drilling in the Gulf of Mexico, and recently waived work requirements for welfare recipients, in direct violation of the welfare reform law. The list is seemingly endless.

Yet where is the media? Obama is struggling to convince Americans to re-elect him, largely because of his horrible record on the economy. However, if they want to make this race about integrity, Obama will fare even worse.
