Don’t Raise Taxes in a Recession!
In the last two weeks, Alabama State Government has been severely curtailed by the forced nine percent cuts in spending due to proration. Remember, proration is required because the Alabama Constitution (yes, the 1901 version that supposedly is outdated) requires a balanced budget. Hence, when revenues fall below expectations, then proration is automatically ordered so that funds are not spent until the monies are available.
Bush: Worst Ever or Just Misunderstood?
Telegraph has an article up that serves as a wrap-up analysis of the Bush presidency on the eve of his departure. There was one paragraph that really stood out:
Peter Feaver, who served as special adviser for strategic planning on Bush’s White House National Security Council, agrees: “He’s had a once-in-a-century natural disaster, Hurricane Katrina, a once in a history of the Republic terrorist attack and he’s had a once-in-a-century financial crisis. Any one of those would be a pivotal moment. To have three is extraordinary.”
Blago is Going to Appoint Senate Seat Anyway
Will the Democrats fight amongst themselves this close to the inauguration? I expect that we will continue to hear less on this story - and more of the Rick Warren daytime TV drama.
CHICAGO (AFP) — The corruption-tainted governor of Illinois was expected to appoint a replacement Tuesday to the senate seat of president-elect Barack Obama, a source close to the governor told AFP.
A defiant Rod Blagojevich, who is accused of trying to sell the seat to the highest bidder, was expected to name former Illinois attorney general Roland Burris, 71, to the seat, the source said on condition of anonymity.
The “Green Fields of Governance” or the “Scorched Earth of Socialism”
By: Don Casey
The global society is experiencing the repercussions from the first tidal wave associated with the “wrenching transformation” referenced by Al Gore in his book, “Earth in the Balance”.
This initial destructive wave (financial in nature) is due to the commitment by the majority of the governments of the world to provide a house for every form of family unit. Thus, this commitment, from the United Nations 1995 Habitat II Conference would be listed as priority one in the June 2001 “United States – Habitat II” Progress Report. Referencing this ill-fated policy, the report states:
One Step to a Brave New World
From Reason comes a story straight out of the world of Aldous Huxley:
Grandma’s pillbox with the days of the week neatly marked is set to go high tech. Tiny edible chips will replace the organizer, tracking when patients take their pills (or don’t) and monitoring the effects of the drugs they’re taking. Proteus, a Redwood City, California, company, has created tiny chips out of silicon grains that, once swallowed, activate in the stomach. The chips send a signal to an external patch that monitors vital parameters such as heart rate, temperature, state of wakefulness or body angle.
Who are the Real Bigots?
I have shifted between anger and humor at the recent outcry from liberals concerning the invitation issued by President-elect Obama to Pastor Rick Warren to lead in prayer at the Obama inauguration. Consider that Presidents of both parties traditionally asked Evangelist Billy Graham to lead in prayer at their respective inaugurations. Graham was long considered America’s Pastor and one might wonder if Rick Warren might be assuming that same role.
Franken Pressing on to Senate Win?
I thought the Dino Rossi v. Chris Gregoire gubernatorial race in Washington state back in 2004 was close, eventually ending with Gregoire winning by 129 votes. However, the Al Franken v. Norm Coleman race for Minnesota’s senate seat is proving far more close:
As the U.S. Senate recount approaches another crossroad today, it appears that DFLer Al Franken’s recently attained lead over Republican Sen. Norm Coleman could narrow to double digits.
Flame On: Let The T-Shirt War Begin
I have hopes of Obama putting forth policies that will begin to “Restore the Republic”, as I should with any new incoming administration. But I haven’t been pleased with what I’ve seen so far and I’m following the Change Gauge with much interest. I am a pretty big fan of bumper stickers and T-Shirts and of all the bumper stickers I’ve seen, I thought this one was pretty good:

And in Response to the Queen’s Message we have….Mahmoud Ahmadinejad?
A peculiar story takes shape in the United Kingdom:
Human rights advocates, parliamentarians and Holocaust memorial organizations are among those vocally condemning a plan to broadcast a Christmas speech by Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad on BBC’s Channel 4 as a counterpoint to the Queen’s traditional message.
