Feinstein to 85,000 Callers: “You’re Confused”

aclouse's picture

During this evening’s Senate vote, Senator Dianne Feinstein (D-CA) took the podium to explain her position on the proposed bailout package. In her statement, she explains that she received 91,000 calls and emails, with 85,000 of them opposed to the measure. Even armed with the knowledge that 93% of her constituents passionate enough to contact her office pleaded for her to vote “nay”, she votes in favor of the bill, claiming that “there is a great deal of confusion out there” and these people “don’t understand” the situation.

See the video below:

In a representative democracy such as ours, one might suppose that our elected officials would have at least taken the opinions of their constituents into consideration, especially when it is as overwhelmingly one-sided.

Are 85,000 people “confused”? or maybe just the one?

What are we left with if the people’s opinion is disregarded and instead our representatives decide what is “best” for us?

This story aside, many representatives do actually listen to their constituents so be sure to find where yours stands at http://track.nocashfortrash.org and remind them to vote “NO” on the bailouts.

I think she’s right. Economics is too confusing for the general public (or even for Senators) to understand. These Senators have been given information that if they don’t pass this bill there will definitely be another Great Depression.

I don’t think a direct democracy would work very well. People just aren’t informed enough to make intelligent decisions.

wow! feinstein! you are soo worthless! & thanks for the middle finger.
i was one of those 85,000 ‘No’ calls you received. right now i don’t feel misinformed. but as a registered democrat living in california, i definitely feel misrepresented.

I’m one of those 91k who called her and now the only call I’m interested in is a recall.

Marvin,

You’re an idiot.

It’s bad enough that Senator Feinstein is entirely ignorant of the history of the Great Depression (so much so that when a bill comes up to follow the 1929 playbook to the letter, she’s all for it), we also have her giving this snotty lecture to those of us who understand the issue better than she does.

The crash is inevitable. The decision is wether to let liquidation proceed as quickly as possible, or to make it worse. Feinstein voted to make it worse.

Marvin Music; Evidently you do not get it.
as well as Fienstein, Both of you need to,READ THE HISTORY BOOKS,ON THE SUBJECT OF THE”GREAT DEPRESSION”,Of course they do not tell the TRUTH,but if you sort through the lies, and read the books through several times,
you may begin to see the picture.

But As BAD as it was,Good CAME FROM,”THE GREAT DEPRESSION”.

WAGES WERE CHEAP,BUT THEN SO WAS EVERYTHING ELSE
The trick was finding a JOB,
But everyone was on a level playing field,
And we can not say the playing field is level now,it is grossly unlevel.

If your business depends on commercial loans for payroll and you’ve been established for over 5 years, you might as well toss in the towel now.

I think the American people understand the bailout. What is amazing is how anyone could fall for it.

Essentially it is based on two promises to the people:

1) You, the taxpayer, might recover the 700 billion dollars someday;

2) Banks might make you a loan once you have helped clear their ledgers of bad debt.

It’s a great deal, isn’t it. We, the taxpayers, fork over 700 billion for a government I.O.U. and the possibility that banks might generously loan us our money back.

As far as I can tell, Marvin didn’t say if the bailout package was a good idea or not. He said the mass public isn’t smart enough to understand it anyway, about which he is correct. Senators were told there were weapons in Iraq, so they voted for war. Senators are now being told there will be another depression if they don’t pass the bailout, so now they are voting for the bailout.

As for direct democracy, this country was never supposed to be one, nor is it now. The founding fathers knew that the uninformed masses could derail the country. They didn’t even allow for direct voting for the president.

P.S. Please don’t confuse me as someone who actually likes Feinstein. I most certainly do not.

“These Senators have been given information that if they don’t pass this bill there will definitely be another Great Depression.”

They also recieved alot of information for years that Saddam Hussein had weapons of mass destruction. Not all the information they get is correct.

Even if the average voter doesn’t hold a degree in Economics, they see that $700 billion is being thrown at Wall Street for actions they didn’t commit. In a time when billions is being spent on two wars and the deficit and debt have reached new highs, it doesn’t seem a lapse of reason to question our leaders’ priorities.

I must admit that I am actually appalled. The fact that after so many responses voting no to the bailout she decides to vote a complete 180 against what the peoples wishes are.

Now I have read quite a bit of information regarding the whole bailout and for the most part this is a matter for the private sector to resolve.

The only role government should have in this who fiasco is to initialize rules and regulations so that it never happens again.

For those who vote yes clearly had money at stake in regards to their current stock holdings.

If you are to clearly think about this who matter and notice. When gas/oil prices were going through the roof to a point where the average person was spending more to get to work rather than bringing what they earned home, it did not matter to congress. It doesn’t affect me, I can still afford gas is their whole take on things.

Now that there is a crisis which actually affects their financial standings, now all of the sudden they want to vote, and vote as quick as possible.

This whole matter doesn’t sit well and I am learning first hand that government isn’t for the people as it should be. Our Government is for their own best intersts and financial gain.

We must figure out how to remove Diane Feinstein from office. She does not serve us.

Taiji Miyagawa's picture

Is it Constitutional to have such a spending bill originate in the Senate? This whole thing is proceeding from the least Democratic Body (unrestricted power of the Sec. of the Treasury was in the first three page paper), to the House. That’s not how it is supposed to work.

Taiji Miyagawa's picture

I see some of Feinstein’s points about frozen credit. Something probably should be done about that in order to get things moving again.

However, and this may seem a bit heartless to some, there is a blessing in heavy disguise here. We’re a nation in debt and economic worry like this creates an incentive for us to start living within our means. I’ve found myself eating beans and rice for lunch instead of going out and not buying every T-shirt or comic book that strikes my fancy.

For our grandparents, being conservative was a lifestyle comprised of more than going to a megachurch and buying a copy of “The Purpose Driven Life” at Wal-Mart. It wouldn’t be awful to get back to that.

Senator
Have you forgotten that you serve the people that elected you? I do understand that my tax dollar is being used to bail out criminal businesses which our elected officials like you covered up.
This did not happen overnight. What did you do to protect the people of California from this? Oh yes, you looked the way.
It is you that does not understand what has happened to Californians.
Californians are not STUPID.
You should resign.

Politicians do not work for the american people, they work for eccentric elitist who truly run this country and select our presidents. By and large politicians are liars and snakes who will do anything to pad their own pockets.

johnny's picture

I can almost guarantee you, when that damn Bailout bill is moved through the house of representatives on Friday, it will pass. $700 billion dollar bailout for elitist crooks. This administration are a bunch of no good crooks and the senate and house reps are no better.

johnny's picture

why did it go from a 110 page no go to a 425 page yes bill, I tried to read the 110 page one but there was no way to download it into a pdf file, I now have this 425 page one to read at liesure to find out what kind of Pork this covers, it was supposed to be a single issue, the one of covering morgage crisis and prosecuting criminal bahavior of the people responcible for meltdown,

I too was one of the no callers. I will remember her vote when it comes time to vote for her. She had better do the right thing and vote to lift the ban on drilling off the coast.

jim w's picture

You know what’s really sad? Now that the “confused constituents” know where this Bimbo stands, they’ll still re-elect her. Look at the idiots in Massachusetts. Does this not stink of Communism when the government decides what is best for you? And the “Bail Out Package”. Is that not Socialism? We’re in serious trouble people because these career politicians DO NOT have your best interests at heart. GOD HELP US ALL!!!!

George Reilly's picture

Sen. Feinstein failed California. I was one of the many ‘nay’ callers and I was naive to think that she would represent us with a nay vote. I would sign a recall petition now. When she supports a bill that primarily benefits the wealthy despite 80,000 calls and has the nerve to provide an apalling explanation of our ignorance on camera — well, that’s corruption. Its a deep corruption where she feels comfortable enough in her position to ignore her consituents best interests and 80,000 calls. Recall Feinstein!
