Senate Bailout Debate Liveblog (Update: Passes with 75%)

Just settled in watching CSPAN and wanted to cover the bailout debate. Watch it live - http://cspan.org/

9:15 - Bailout Amendment Passes With 75%. Burden now falls back to the House of Representatives. Keep calling to keep the pressure on at track.nocashfortrash.org! 25 senators Voted Against: Allard, Barrasso, Brownback, Bunning, Cantwell, Cochran, Crapo, DeMint, Dole, Dorgan, Enzi, Feingold, Inhofe, Johnson, Landrieu, Nelson (FL), Roberts, Sanders, Sessions, Shelby, Stabenow, Tester, Vitter, Wicker, Wyden

9:03 - Sen. Reid stumping over “bi-partisanship” prior to vote. “So many good things” more like too things.

8:56 - Senators thanking Dave, “the face on C-SPAN”. Vote on Dodd amendment coming up.

8:19 - @ 7pm got called to do a few interviews. I’ll have to make up the rest of this later :P

6:49 - John Kerry could have been the President. “This is a distasteful vote…but we have to do the responsible thing.”

6:45 - Graham: “I know this isn’t a perfect bill and I know this is a bad choice…”

6:38 - Lindsey Graham saying thanks to the Senators who brought us here. Back to the talking points. Fear the catastrophic DISASTER! Says there will always be people willing to tell him what not to do, and not to listen them. Listen to the Plumber who wants to make payroll. It’s about the people who want to buy cars.

“Borrowing money responsibly is the heart and the soul of the free market economy.”

Fail.

6:32 - Senator Bill Nelson up. “This bill rewards the banks and leaves the little person with the short end of the stick…” “Bill does little to help individual homeowners.”

6:28 - Shelby is solidly against the bill. He has no illusions about the debate. Please join me in watching the debates.

6:21 - Senate Republicans seem to be making too much of a partisan argument against the bailout. Too much blame on the D’s on what was.

6:16 - Shelby says we can’t solve this problem in a matter of days.

6:13 - Bob Menendez is for the bill. The people in support of this bill all have the same talking points.

5:59 - Pete Domenici is up and talking about the Government making money off of this deal. Similar to the Savings & Loan deals.

5:55 - Charles Schumer: The plan that Secretary Paulson first brought forth was awful. Talks about all the good parts of the bill. Is supporting the bill. This package is better than doing nothing. Hopes for strong bipartisan support.

5:44 - Jeff Sessions up, is in agreement with Sanders regarding his astonishment that the Senate would consider giving out $700 billion in authorized expenditures to a man who helped create the problem [Paulson]. He will not be voting in favor of the bill.

5:42 - 42,000 people signed Sanders’ petition for his amendment. Another example of the left coming against this as well.

5:39 - Sanders is introducing an amendment that puts a 10% tax on anyone making more than half a million a year and a family that makes 1mil a year… Saying that should pay for the bailout. Hardcore populist move & rhetoric.

5:35 - Sanders: $35 billion dollars in bonuses from the 5 major investment firms in 2007.

5:32 - Sanders asks whose money we are using. His amendment is about whose money we are using.

5:29 - Sanders has a huge sign with Paulson saying that Paulson (former CEO from Goldman Sachs) was rewarded $30+ million bonus from goldman sachs - who got us into this mess in the first place.

5:27 - Bernie Sanders says this bill should not pass the Senate unless his amendment is passed. “we must act in a way that improves the system.” “This bill does not effectively address the issue of oversight…foreclosures…executive compensation…golden parachutes…”

5:26 - Bernie Sanders is up, seems mad, proposed an amendment. Speaking now.

5:23 - DeMint: “We need to tell the American people that whether we pass this legislation or not, there WILL be suffering…”

5:17 - DeMint video needs to be posted and distributed… Absolutely nailed it. His office needs to be contacted in support. http://track.nocashfortrash.org/node/1387

5:16 - DeMint going into the socialist overhaul of our country from everything to energy to the economy. “If we were honest in explaining to the American People… we might be able to ask them about $700 billion… this system was not created by the free market… it was created by the government.”

5:16 - Call to order… no one was listening to the opposition.

5:15 pm est - Jim DeMint up, he thanks everyone for their work, but does not believe this bill is the right choice. In fact, he thinks this will do more harm than good.

5:13 pm est - They are doing a quorum call. :)

5:12 pm est - Obama: “…this is a necessary but not sufficient step…”

5:08 pm est - Obama just asked for consent for more time for his speech. President of the Senate: “Whatever you would like.” Everyone laughed… Kinda creepy.

5:06 pm est - Barack Obama is wrapping up a speech on the bailout. “It’s the right thing to do.” “Protect the taxpayer.”

This is great. I very glad to see that the predictions I made on this topic became true. I am sure that there will be a big number of people who will be very happy to find this out.
