Presidential Debate Live Blog

Please join us for the first of three Presidential Debates at 8:30 PM Eastern time on Friday, September 26th for a live-blog of the evening’s discussion.  United Liberty will be providing commentary to complement the live television coverage, and your comments are certainly welcome.  This event will be covered by the United Liberty writers along with special guest bloggers Adam Kokesh of Iraq Veterans Against the War, Nancy Robbins of Liberty Cafe, and Matt Colvin of campaignforlibertea.com.

It doesn’t look like it’s going to happen. I’m a Mississippian and an Ole Miss Alum. We were looking forward to hosting this debate. With the prospect of the Nation and the World watching this debate, the City of Oxford, MS has done a lot of work. The entire downtown area has been refurbished to an immaculate state. A lot of money was spent to make sure the town looks fantastic. I hope McCain changes his mind and blows in for debate. We will at least host Barack Obama.

Send me an e-mail with the price for an ad (for john Monds) the size of the Barr ‘08 ad to the left. I’ll reply back with the graphics and we’ll see if you can get it up by the end of the debate.

Why is Ralph Nader excluded from the debates? He’s the only candidate against this communist move to send 700,000,000,000 tax payer dollars to corporate fat cats who are destroying the economy. What is going on? Are these debates rigged or something? Nader’s at 5% in the national polls. That’s impressive considering he’s been ignored by the wall street owned media.

Chad's picture

Vote Nader! There’s something fishy when both candidates exclude third parties from the debate. It’s as if the Dems and Republicans have rigged a system in which they alternate as President every 8 years.

This is Adam Kokesh blogging live from The Grove at Ole Miss! Rock the debate!

Adam Kokesh's picture

Neither of the two candidates care about the American people. Obama spits on the fact that he is half white and McCain has supported Bush for the past eight years. Nader has my vote on November 4th and anyone who cares about this country please do the same. Nader ‘08

nader is the only guy in the running that is for the people VOTE NADER

sam's picture

Sam and Chad, I have to agree. Nader has a lot to say that the two big parties don’t talk about. He’s on the ballot in 45 states this year. Democracy can only suffer for his exclusion.

Jay's picture

So right! Nader’s exclusion makes clear that our democracy is corrupt. It is exciting to see his support continuing to rise despite that. I keep hoping that enough people will find out about and tune in to his message in time for the election.

Vote Nader all the way! Only one that doesn’t need to talk out the side off his mouth! Both claiming they had seen the train wreck coming and had warned about it! Nader is on record from back in 2000!

i think these 2 on stage are a joke we need a real debate for the people not all the lies mccbama are telling us listen to RALPH NADER

sam's picture

Where is Ralph Nader? Why are these 2 corporate backed puppets scared to debate Nader? Ralph has dedicated his entire life to helping the American working middle class. WE want to hear Nader !

WR Carb's picture

Why Ralph Nader and other independents were not invited to the debate?

Why not implement some of the same measures that FDR put into place in 1932 instead of “bailing out” the institutions that caused the economic mess in first place?

Julio Rodriguez's picture

Another Nader fan here. The only candidate that doesn’t want to bomb Iran (yes, Obama supports the current blockade resolution). The only candidate that is Anti-Apartheid in terms of dealing with the Palestinian-Israeli conflict.

Sabra's picture

Where is Raplh Nader? The American people want to hear ALL canidates! Why are we being denied our right to hear ALL canidates speak? Ralph Nader has a right to be hear and the AMerican people can’t be shut out by corupt corporate backed canidates! My vote is going with Ralph Nader !

WR Carb's picture

my vote is going to ralph nader

Even if these debates happen, they will be a farce, a slap in the face to the basic ideals of democracy. It’s time to have a REAL debate on the issues. The problem is that McCain and Obama are afraid that if Ralph Nader is allowed to debate, they are going to be exposed as the hypocrites that they are. They are both going to give in to the corporate powers and do nothing to protect this nation or to present any real change. Only ONE candidate will give us Change we can believe in, and that candidate is Ralph Nader. It’s time to Democracy back into the democratic process. LET NADER DEBATE!!!

Rollie Finke's picture

Where is Nader? Where is Barr? Where is McKinney? Where is Baldwin? They’re all on enough ballots to win the Electoral College.

Tune into Bill Maher tonight after the debates to see Nader’s take on the two candidates (Chris Rock is on, too.)

Also, check YouTube at least two hours after the end of the debate to hear Nader’s responses to the debate questions.

Chad, the reason Nader has not been invited to participate in the debates is as follows:The Commission on Presidential Debates decides who will be invited to participate. It is a private entity.

This “non-partisan” commission was created by the two-major parties, and is co-chaired by former chairs of the DNC and RNC. This Bi-partisan leadership is done under the guise of ensuring the highest quality and fairness to the American people- even though it is BI-partisan rather than NON-partisan.

The two major parties sign statements saying they will only participate in CPD debates if pre-approved guidelines are followed (e.g. specific issues, no cross-talk, strict time limits, NO THIRD PARTIES).

The CPD is highly secretive and will not allow the public to witness party dealings that decide these guidelines. The contacts themselves are also tightly held secrets.

Many Americans know on some level that the “debates” are phony and highly-scripted. If this triggers any political unrest, voters can focus blame on the CPD. The private CPD takes the political hit, rather than having voter disillusionment and anger directed at the Democrat or Republican parties where it belongs.

Ralph Nader filed a lawsuit, and lost, against the CPD for it’s unfair, arbitrary rules and exclusionary tactics. The ruling stated that since the Commission on Presidential Debates is a private entity, they may run debates however they choose— no matter how undemocratic.

If you’re not happy about this, let everyone know. Encourage them to go to www.votenader.org/debates to find out what they can do to end this charade. Let’s Open the Debates! GO RALPH!

Really, where is Ralph Nader? He should be in on these debates. I think he’s smart enough to take down both of the other candidates. Please, open up the debates. It’s wrong, and unfair.

Gordie's picture

Gordie thats why they wont let him in they dont want someone to tell the truth

sam's picture

They are afraid of Nader. He would be a great leader. They are the same McBama. No difference. Nader would put us on the right track and let this be a great Nation again

Not letting Nader into the debates is like communism. Only commies did and do this. How sickening… absolutely repulsive vermin.

OPEN THE DEBATES TO EXCLUDED 3RD PARTY CANDIDATES

CK's picture

This “debate” is really a pathetic and offensive charade scripted to not offend any of their corporate masters and airing to pacify us citizens, not debate their qualifications and the future of this country.

These “debates” need more voices from outside of the establishment to bring real choices for the American people who want to reclaim our democracy.

We need Ralph Nader in these debates!!

CitizenActivist's picture

I can’t believe anyone thinks this country is a legitimate democracy. We don’t have Ralph Nader or any of the viable third party candidates in the debate, and we’re stuck with these two corporate spokespersons as candidates. I’m sick to my stomach every time I think of the people who vote for these corporate run parties.

Ryan Henige's picture

The presidential debate was a double-headed corporate beast talking to itself, advocating bombs away with variant immediacy. McCain has already gone off the deep end. Obama is heading there quick. Neither offers well- thought out solutions to the severe economic crisis and ailing infrastructure..just the distraction of war stuff. This country and the world deserves better. Too many have already died….for profits. Vote for peace and freedom. Vote Nader.

I think McCain has taken lessons from his VP…he might not be winking but his jokes have to go. He is a member the good old boy club…
